What is Human Trafficking?
The Maryland Human Trafficking Task Force defines human trafficking as, “the illegal trading, either nationally or internationally, of human beings for the purpose of commercial sexual exploitation or forced labor; a modern-day form of slavery.” The human trafficking industry earns 150 billion dollars yearly by exploiting an estimated 27 million victims.
Tragically, the average age of a person that is targeted and commercially sexually exploited is between 12 and 14 years old. Last year, the State Department estimated that there are 200,000 victims currently being trafficked within the US. In 2000, nearly 250,000 American children were estimated to be at risk of commercial sexual exploitation.
Maryland is emerging as a hot spot for human trafficking activity. Our proximity to large cities such as Baltimore and Washington D.C. and our access to transportation hubs such as I-95 and Baltimore Washington International Airport make Maryland an ideal pass-through state and destination for traffickers.
For these reasons, the truck stops, rest areas, and bus stations of Maryland are becoming virtual “goldmines” for human trafficking activity.1
What Can I Do?
On October 3rd, individuals and businesses from all over Anne Arundel County will gather together at the Glen Burner 5K Run/2K Walk to take a stand against human trafficking both locally and internationally. You can participate the movement against human trafficking in three ways:
- Run or Walk: By registering to participate in the Glen Burner, you’re donating to assist human trafficking victims and raising awareness about this important human rights issue.
- Donate: All proceeds from the Glen Burner 5K Run/2K Walk will be donated to two beneficiaries who work diligently to prevent human trafficking and assist victims.
- Become a Sponsor: Partnering with local and national business is extremely important as it expresses our community’s unwillingness to let human trafficking continue. By donating to the Glen Burner, you’re lending your voice to the growing number of business owners and workers who stand up for justice.
Who Do We Partner With?
AROUND THE WORLD
She Is Safe works internationally to rescue trafficked women and help them heal from their experience in the sex industry. After rehabilitation, the women are then given the chance to help rescue others.
IN OUR BACKYARD
The Araminta Freedom Initiative works in our community towards the prevention of the sexual exploitation of minors, the systemic economic deterrence of the business of human trafficking, intervention and rescue of those held against their will, and provision of aftercare initiatives that provide healing and wholeness to victims.
